It’s a tragic dilemma I find myself far too familiar with. An average afternoon on my way home from school, it hasn’t been the best day, perhaps I didn’t do too well on my bio quiz or I just didn’t like the weather, but I know what I need to cheer me up. I take the long way home so I can pass by Rite Aid. I dart into the store and arrive at the candy aisle. This is where I face the moral dilemma. I don’t know which brand of gummys to buy. Haribo or Black Forest?

I like Haribo because they are always very firm! In my opinion it is just the premium choice, but often it can be stale and more expensive. It comes in bulk in 3 LBs but there is no zipper to keep them fresh.

Black Forest are always very juicy and flavorful. The green flavor is delicious. It comes in bulk in 5LBs and has a zipper to ensure freshness!

My conclusion: If you are buying just a small packet go Haribo, but if you are buying in bulk for a roadtrip or music festival go Black Forest!

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

It was a typical Wednesday afternoon, around my schools lunch hour, when my friends and I took our little venture on over to the nearest Whole Foods, to pick up a fast, tasty lunch. I was particularly ecstatic that day, because Whole Foods was offering Indian food, not a choice they offer daily, but my own personal favorite. To add to my current excitement, I thought I might try an Arnold Palmer, by the famously known tea company called Tazo. I had only heard good things about Tazo tea, so I assumed that their Arnold Palmers were just as equally satisfying. As I sat down to eat, I excitingly opened my drink, and took a sip. The first idea that came into my mind was horror. The taste was awful, and the smell, even worse. I thought to myself, maybe by the second sip, the funky taste , that resembled the poo appearance the drink came in, will eventually fade away. But by the second sip, I knew where that puppy was headed for, and that was the trash. I asked my friends to try it, thinking I had some kind of weird genetic defect to the taste. My friends could all agree, that something was wrong with that Arnold Palmer, either the expiration date was off, or Tazo tea has yet to master their Arnold Palmers. Either way, I was seriously disappointed, maybe next time, I will stick to making my own Arnold Palmers, or start out with low expectations.

They are famous for this certain dish called either meluga or megula, I can’t exactly remember. It consists of rice, chicken and a whole load of other ingredients that I don’t even want to know being the picky eater I am. The portions were out of control since they consider it rude not to finish the entire bowl meaning each person must have at least 5 servings. Their tradition calls for eating on the floor on mattresses, very comfty.

2) Deep Fried Dill Pickles

A crispy and decadent delight, these pickles are a must have. Served with a ranch dipping sauce to cool down the piping hot pickles, my mouth wanted to never eat anything eslse.

3) Deep Fried Macaroni and Cheese Balls on a Stick

The macaroni and cheese was masked by the taste of the thick deep fry batter, and was literally unedible upon arrival. It was not worth the sluggish feeling it gave us and the mess it created.

4) Deep Fried S’mores

This creation was utterly delicious though not as authentic as I had hoped. One bite told me all I needed to know as my teeth sunk into none other than…MARSHMALLOW FLUFF. These were not true toasted marshmallows and for that I must dock points, but it was a tasty treat.

5) The Blooming Onion

Oh…the blooming onion…you can never go wrong with it. My second time enjoying this godly onion, served with two messy cups of cool ranch dressing, this onion is perfect for sharing with a group of people. There’s always enough to go around and by the time you’re done eating the onion you’re ready for a group nap. Which we had. Possibly because they dose their batter with opium but why think about it?

6) Deep Fried Wisconsin Cheese Curds

So good it made me want to cry. Erica did cry. Just the word curd makes me want to vomit but these curds did not make me vomit-longing at all. In fact, the opposite. I was ready to get a second tray of these oddly rubbery deep fried cheese bites. They tasted so fresh it was as if their maker had taken these cheese curds fresh from his cow.

7) Deep Fried Reeces Sticks on a stick and The Channel 10 News

Yes, it’s true what you’ve been hearing, I AM famous. I was on the Channel 10 news for being a fat ass. At the time I was eating an order of Deep Fried Reeces Sticks on a stick, and the gooey chocolate and pancakey outer coating was a traditional combination, and very rich. I was not impressed, but I was not unimpressed. I could have done with or without this treat on a stick. But heyooo, it got me on the news.

 Extra Large Lemonade

This lemonade was extremely refreshing, keeping us hydrated and hopped up on sugar. Without this fine refillable cup, we would have passed out from heat and exhaustion. Thank god we had it.

9) Frozen Chocolate Covered Banana with Nuts

If only George Michael had made it, this banana could have scored a 10. But it just made me uncomfortable watching Erica eat it so I’ll have to dock a few points. It was a nice thing to eat as it was very hot out, and the banana is very cold.

10) Strawberry Shortbread Stacker

A nice snack for those out there who just aren’t emotionally prepared to handle the world of deep fried foods. Cool, luscious strawberry layered with fresh vanilla whipped cream and moist slices of pound cake. It was gone in 60 seconds.

11) Deep Fried Artichoke

A good snack, reminded me of french fries, though it really does need a dipping sauce.

8/10 on the fry-o-meter

12) Taste of the Fair Funnel Cake

A mini funnel cake, priced at two dollars, it was nothing special. If only I could have had some boysenberry dipping sauce like they give you at Knotts Berry Farm it would have been a whole different experience. But it wasn’t.

3/10 on the fry-o-meter

And the last pit stop of the day: the Pig Races

This was a cruel act, but definitely worth watching. They line up four baby piggies next to each other and set them off the race towards the oreo on the ground at the end of the track. They fight and bite their ways to the finish line where the fastest swine is graced with the prize of an oreo.

And that concluded our trip to the Del Mar Fair.
